The green wall in our featured project photo is exactly this construction: a single book-matched translucent slab, framed in brass-toned trim, lit edge to edge with no visible hot spots.

Which stones work — and which do not

Light transmission is a property of the crystal, not the colour. Classic onyx is the reference material: honey, amber, white and green onyx all glow warmly, which is why backlit onyx bars became a hotel-lobby cliché decades ago. Translucent quartzites — the family the green slab in our photo belongs to — are the current designer favourite: harder than onyx, more dramatic veining, and a colder, more mineral glow. Dense, dark stones do not backlight. Nero Marquina, Emperador and most granites are effectively opaque at any workable thickness — if a supplier offers to backlight them, the light will only leak at the veins and the wall will look patchy.
