Granite vs quartz is the single most-searched countertop comparison in the US, and most of the guides answering it were written by whoever sells quartz. We sell both — natural granite through our partner mill and factory-made engineered quartz through the same production line — so this one has no stone to sell you harder than the other. All prices below are market estimates for August 2026, built from published US supplier and fabricator pricing plus our partner mill’s factory-direct data. Where we are estimating rather than quoting, we say so.

The short version: granite is a quarried natural stone, cheaper on average, immune to heat and UV, and needs occasional sealing. Quartz is a factory product — crushed quartz in resin — perfectly uniform, never sealed, but weak against heat and sunlight, and it carries a health story in the fabrication industry that granite does not. Read past the marketing copy on both sides before you sign a contract.

The one-paragraph answer

Granite is 6–7 on the Mohs hardness scale, does not etch, shrugs off a hot pan straight from the stove, and works outdoors. It costs $40–100/sqft installed in the US (exotics to $200), needs a penetrating sealer every 1–3 years, and no two slabs look alike — which is either the whole point or a dealbreaker depending on how much you want your kitchen to look like your neighbour’s. Quartz is engineered from roughly 90–95% crushed quartz aggregate bound in polyester resin, costs $50–125/sqft installed, never needs sealing, and comes in perfectly repeatable batches — useful for large kitchens, islands and multi-unit developments where slab matching matters. Its weaknesses are the resin: it scorches under a hot pan and yellows under UV, so it is not an outdoor material. And since 2024, the industry making it has been under real regulatory pressure over crystalline silica dust exposure during fabrication — a genuine factor in the comparison, not a scare story, covered in detail below.

If the kitchen sees hot pans straight off the stove or lives partly outdoors, granite. If the priority is zero maintenance and perfectly matched large-format tops, quartz — bought from a mill that can show you its dust-control practices.

Granite is cheaper at every price point except the far exotic end, where a level 5 granite and a designer quartz colourway land in the same range. Quartz’s premium buys uniformity and zero sealing, not durability — on heat and outdoor use, granite wins outright.

What each material actually is

Granite is an igneous rock — quartz, feldspar and mica crystallised together as magma cooled slowly underground, which is why it has that speckled, crystalline look under a good polish. It has been quarried at industrial scale in India, Brazil, China and Norway for over a century; supply is not the constraint, logistics and fabrication are.

Engineered quartz is a factory product patented in Italy in the 1960s (Breton’s technology) and now made worldwide, including by mills in China that also process natural stone. The recipe is roughly 90–95% crushed quartz aggregate, 5–10% polyester resin, and pigment, vacuum-pressed and cured into slabs. That high quartz-aggregate content is what makes it hard and scratch-resistant — and it is also the reason the fabrication side of this industry has become a genuine health issue, covered below.

Durability and daily use

Heat. Granite takes a pan straight from the stove without a trivet — genuinely, not as a marketing claim. Quartz’s resin binder starts to discolour and can crack around 150°C (300°F); every quartz fabricator and brand warranty tells you to use a trivet, and the warranty is voided if you do not.

Scratching. Both resist knife scratches in normal use; neither is a cutting board.

Etching and staining. Neither granite nor quartz etches from citrus or vinegar, unlike marble and most limestone. Granite is porous enough to stain from oil or wine if unsealed for years; quartz is essentially non-porous and does not stain in normal use.

UV and outdoor use. This is the clean dividing line. Granite is stone — sunlight does nothing to it, which is why it is the default material for outdoor kitchens and pool surrounds (see our outdoor stone comparison notes in the quartzite vs granite guide). Quartz resin yellows and can even crack under thermal cycling outdoors; virtually every quartz brand voids the warranty for exterior installation.

Maintenance. Granite needs a penetrating sealer every 1–3 years — a $25–40 bottle and twenty minutes, or $75–150 if the fabricator does it. A simple water-drop test tells you when: if water beads for 15+ minutes, you are fine. Quartz is never sealed, full stop, which is the single biggest reason renovators and rental-property owners default to it.

The silica dust question

This section exists because leaving it out would be dishonest, not because we are trying to scare you off quartz.

Cutting and polishing engineered quartz releases fine crystalline silica dust at concentrations well above what natural granite produces during fabrication — because engineered quartz is manufactured to be 90%+ crystalline silica by weight, while granite typically runs 20–45%. Fabricators who cut quartz dry, or without proper wet-cutting and ventilation, have developed accelerated silicosis, a serious and sometimes fatal lung disease, at rates that pushed regulators to act. Australia banned the manufacture, supply and installation of engineered stone benchtops outright from July 2024 after a national review found no safe threshold for dry-fabrication conditions. The US OSHA respirable crystalline silica standard (29 CFR 1910.1053) covers stone fabrication shops and has driven wider adoption of wet-cutting, local exhaust ventilation and respirators — but enforcement and shop-by-shop compliance vary, and this is an industry-wide concern that affects every quartz brand, not one manufacturer.

None of this is a reason to avoid a finished quartz countertop in your kitchen — the risk is overwhelmingly in the cutting and polishing stage, not in a sealed, installed slab in daily household use. It is a reason to ask your fabricator, or your factory supplier, what dust-control practices they actually run, the same way you would ask a food supplier about their kitchen. Granite fabrication carries the same dust hazard in principle — silica is silica — but at a materially lower concentration per cut, which is why the regulatory focus has landed almost entirely on engineered stone rather than natural granite or quartzite.

Real estate agents and appraisers still treat “natural stone” as a listing feature that reads well, and granite retains that association more directly than a manufactured surface, particularly in higher-end markets where buyers associate quarried stone with permanence. Quartz’s selling point at resale is closer to “modern and low-maintenance” — it appeals in the mid-market and to buyers who have owned granite before and are tired of resealing.

Design-wise, granite’s speckled builder colours from the 2000s (the Santa Cecilias and Baltic Browns) read dated in 2026’s design-led kitchens, which is the real reason quartz gained share through the 2010s — not durability, aesthetics. But granite’s higher levels — the flowing whites, the uniform blacks like Absolute Black — compete directly with quartz on looks while beating it on heat and outdoor tolerance. If pattern variety and a natural-stone story matter more than perfect uniformity, granite’s upper levels are worth a look before defaulting to quartz.

Quartz costs about $700 more than warehouse granite on this kitchen and skips the $100 sealing line, but factory-direct granite still undercuts both by 40–47% because it removes the fabricator markup, not because granite is inherently cheaper stone. Factory-direct quartz-countertops run $18–45/sqft at the mill and are worth the same comparison at project scale — the constraint is the same as granite: roughly ten tops per crate and 8–10 weeks lead time before it makes sense over a single-kitchen warehouse buy.

Which one for which project

  • Rental units and flips — quartz. No sealing, no maintenance calls from tenants, consistent look across units.
  • Outdoor kitchens, pool surrounds, sunny climates — granite, without a second thought. Quartz voids its own warranty outdoors.
  • A kitchen that actually cooks — granite, for the hot-pan tolerance alone. A dropped pan on quartz is a repair call.
  • Large islands or multi-unit developments needing matched slabs — quartz, for batch consistency a natural stone cannot guarantee.
  • Budget-first with natural-stone preference — granite, level 1–2 stones like Ubatuba or Black Galaxy undercut every branded quartz.

FAQ

Is granite or quartz better for a kitchen?

Depends what “better” means. Granite wins on heat tolerance and outdoor use; quartz wins on zero maintenance and colour consistency. Neither etches from citrus, and both are durable enough for decades of daily cooking.

Is granite cheaper than quartz?

Usually. Mid-range granite installs at $60–85/sqft, mid-range branded quartz at $70–100/sqft (market estimates, August 2026). Entry-level granite like Ubatuba undercuts every branded quartz; a level 4–5 exotic granite can cost as much as mid-range quartz.

Is quartz really more dangerous to make than granite?

The fabrication risk is real and material: engineered quartz is 90%+ crystalline silica by weight versus 20–45% in granite, and dry-cutting it without proper wet-cutting and ventilation has caused accelerated silicosis in fabrication workers — serious enough that Australia banned engineered stone benchtops from July 2024. A finished, installed quartz countertop in a home poses no comparable risk; the exposure is at the fabrication stage. Does granite need to be sealed and quartz doesn’t?
